The Contract
Pete Alonso and the Baltimore Orioles have agreed on a 5 year deal worth $155 million. This continues the overall frustration of the Mets’ offseason, as they have now lost 3 fan favorites in Edwin Diaz (Dodgers via Free agency) Brandon Nimmo (Rangers via trade) and Pete Alonso (Orioles via Free agency). The way the Mets lost Alonso is mind-boggling and honestly hard to comprehend. They didn’t even make him an offer. You read that right. The man who holds the record for the most home runs in the Mets franchise history didn’t even receive a single offer from his team. The Mets were reportedly unwilling to give Alonso 3 years plus, but that still doesn’t justify at least making him an offer to try and reel him back to the team.
Mets front office
Mets owner Steve Cohen, who apologized to his fanbase at the end of September after his team failed to make the postseason, acknowledged those concerns on Wednesday. He said in a text to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, “I totally understand the fans’ reaction. There is lots of offseason left to put a playoff team on the field.” At this point, there is really no saving this offseason for the New York Mets, as they are looking like a brand new team. Fans have never been more frustrated with General Manager David Stearns, and mayhem has broken in Queens.
Orioles Future
For the Orioles, they just made a huge splash with this signing. For years, Baltimore has been viewed as a young, up-and-coming team built on homegrown talent, but adding a star like Alonso signals that the front office is ready to win right now. Alonso’s power instantly transforms the middle of the lineup, giving the Orioles the kind of proven, game-changing bat they’ve lacked in past years. Beyond the numbers, his arrival brings a veteran edge to a clubhouse full of rising stars, showing the fanbase and the players that the organization is fully committed to chasing a championship. It’s the kind of move that shifts expectations overnight and could be remembered as a turning point in the franchise’s new era.
